Combine your visit to the thermal waters of Thermae Agiasmata with a series of activities that will bring you in touch with the nature, the history and the traditions of the valley of Agiasmata.
In the valley of Agiasmata (Eastern Amani mountain) are the villages Chalandra, Aphrodisia, Keramos, Leptopoda, Egrigoros and Kourounia.
Nature seemed generous in this region, since it endowed it with evergreen forests and ravines.
Also, the human toil left behind some architectural masterpieces of stone: deserted stone built villages (Kato Chalandra, Kamini, Lardatos), old terraces, wells, threshing floors, furnaces, stone built streets.
The “ariousios wine” is a wine that was produced in the region of mountain Amani in the antiquity. It was widely known in the then world.
However, for many centuries production was abandoned until 2004, when a group of people from the surrounding villages reinstated it in life with the founding of the company ARIOUSIOS S.A.
Several times in the past attempts were made to exploit the antimony reserves that were discovered in the area of Keramos, roughly at the point where the valley of Agiasmata begins.
Systematic extraction and processing began, however, at the end of the 19th century by a French company. Later, during the Decade of the 30’s, the mines were taken over by Bodossakis (a Greek industrialist).
In the villages of the valley of Agiasmata are held each year various celebrations and events that attract locals as well as visitors from other parts of Chios and Greece.
The climax of all the events are those held in August.
The monasteries and chapels are scattered on the two mountains that enclose the valley of Agiasmata. A key characteristic of almost all of them is that they are very old buildings, where pieces of columns from pre-Christian churches have been used in many of them.
Very close, to the west of the settlement, on the hill above the hot spring, is the small monastery of Evangelistria. The monastery has cells, however for several years there are no more monks. Entrance is free.
