Monasteries and Chapels

The monasteries and chapels of the Agiasmata Valley, which are scattered on the two mountains that surround it, tell the story of the place.

Monastery of Evangelistria

A key characteristic of almost all the monasteries and chapels in the area is that they are very old buildings, where pieces of columns from pre-Christian churches have been used in many of them.

In the area there are abundant traces of ancient buildings and toponyms that bear witness to human presence since ancient times. This opinion is also supported by stories of various travelers (see Andre Thevet, 1549 and L. Dapper, 1688).

Very close, to the west of the settlement, on the hill above the hot spring, is the small monastery of Evangelistria. The monastery has cells, however for several years there are no more monks. Entrance is free.

Agios Isidoros & Agios Georgios Chimonios

On the eastern side of the settlement, a little higher, next to the rock, the visitor will find the chapel of Agios Isidoros. The chapel is built on the ruins of an early Christian church, whose architectural members were visible on the walls before they were covered with cement mortar. The thickness of the walls at the windows is 1.40 meters, while at the foundations it exceeds 2 meters.

The same road leads, at a distance of 2-3 kilometers, to the Chimonio area, where the chapel of Agios Georgios is located. It is an ancient building with built-in building material of ancient buildings. The walls are held with keys that are not visible due to masonry.

Chapel of Agia Irene

A little further from Chimonio, towards the sea, is the area of Astrachia which is an old settlement, unfortunately without any traces of today. It is, however, mentioned in the book by F. Argentis (The occupation of Chios by the Genovese, 1958) in agreement of the Genovese from 1381.

In this area, higher up the mountain, is the chapel of Agia Irini where there are stones of gray ashlar stone cut with tormus (pencil hole) and many fragments of pointed vessels. The Chios historian Georgios Zolotas mentions in the history of Chios that the foundations of a second temple can be seen there

Chapels of Agios Prokopios & Mesopentekistos

About halfway from the former Antimony mines to Agiasmata, on the left, a little higher, on the mountainside, is the chapel of Agios Prokopios.

The chapel of Mesopentekistos at the Tylimena site has the same architectural features with abundant sherds of vases and other pottery painted deep red and built into the wall of the temple.

Chapels of Agios Nikolaos, Agia Zoni & Agioi Anargyro

Finally, in the settlement of Agiasmata there are the churches of Agios Nikolaos, Agia Zoni and Agioi Anargyroi. The first two, which are also the oldest, are built with architectural elements of pre-Christian buildings and early Christian churches, which unfortunately are not visible in the Holy Zone due to masonry.
